Bangalore- AB de Villiers played a absolutely astonishing innings for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as he together with partner-in-crime, Virat Kohli, blew the Gujarat Lions away in drubbing them with 144 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday. Reports Piet Lategan.
The Challengers batted first as they lost the wicket of Chris Gayle in the fifth over and then De Villiers and Kohli stole the show as both men played a remarkable innings and breaking several records along the way. De Villiers was destroyer-in-chief as he clubbed 129* off 52 balls with 10 boundaries and 12 towering sixes while putting every bowler to the sword. Kohli was not far behind as he bludgeoned 109 off 55 balls with five boundaries and eight sixes. The pair only got separated after Kohli got dismissed off the penultimate ball of the innings after the duo pelted 229 runs off only 96 balls in causing 16 overs of devastating destruction. That enabled the Challengers to post a mammoth 248/3 in their allotted 20 overs as they then dismissed the Lions for a mediocre 104 in 18.4 overs.
De Villiers scores his runs at 360 degrees all round the wicket as he is sometimes impossible to bowl at and to contain. While he is blessed with plenty of natural talent and a superb eye it is his footwork and the way in which he utilizes his crease that makes all the difference. The “wunderkind” also gets into the bowlers head and sometimes anticipates what ball will be bowled at him.
As Kohli stated afterwards: “AB de Villiers is the best batsman of his generation”. What a compliment for the superstar of the Proteas.
