Irrepressible AB does it again

Kolkata- The Royal Challengers Bangalore romped to a nine-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the knockouts of IPL 2016 at Eden Gardens on Monday. Reports Piet Lategan.

AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli were instrumental in another victory of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2016. That sounds like a stuck record. You bet. The pair once again put another team to the sword with a scintillating partnership. This time it was the turn of the Kolkata Knight Riders who could only stand at admire.

Kohli won the toss for Bangalore as they bowled first only to restrict the Knight Riders to 183/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Any total would be extremely tough to defend with the likes of Chris Gayle, Dhoni and De Villiers batting against you. This is exactly what transpired as Gayle made a quickfire 49 off 31 balls and hitting five boundaries and four sixes. With Gayle in full flight no ground will ever be big enough as he and Kohli put on 71 in seven overs as opening partnership.

When Gayle was trapped plum in front De Villiers and Kohli got reunited and it was business as usual for the illustrious pair as absolute carnage ensued. The pair who put on a mammoth 229 off 96 balls which also is the highest-ever partnership in the history of T20 cricket against the Gujarat Lions on Saturday, dismantled the Knight Riders with consummate ease. They put on 115 unbeaten runs in 11 overs as they scored boundaries right round the wicket to storm to 186/1 with eight balls left to spare. Kohli scored a breezy 75* off 51 balls that included five boundaries and three sixes and De Villiers was not to be outdone as he made his merry way to a destructive 59* off 31 balls with five boundaries and three sixes. This was the umpteenth partnership of substance between the two superstars as bowlers have no answer to their surreal exploits in IPL 2016.

The batting supremo De Villiers amazes everybody with his imperious timing and unbelievable footwork every time he walks to the crease with a six he hit over midwicket with minimum effort being a masterclass. All the bowlers in the IPL are sure to quake in their boots tonight. The Challengers are still scheduled to meet the KingsXI Punjab and the Delhi Daredevils and they need to win both to progress to the knockouts.
