Milan- Real Madrid defied the odds by winning their third Champions League as they beat Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties after it finished in a stalemate of 1-1 after normal playing time at the San Siro on Saturday. Reports Piet Lategan.
First it was Real Madrid that had a numerical disadvantage as Daniel Karvajal got sent off on 11 minutes before Sergio Ramos put Real ahead with a wonderful goal from a set piece on 15 minutes. Real went into the break with a lead of 1-0.
In the second stanza Atletico came back into the game strongly as Yannick Carrasco equalized for them on 79 minutes with the game heading for extra time.
In extra time both teams were reluctant to push players forward as they were anticipating penalties. This is exactly what transpired as both teams struggled to find the winner.
In the shootout Atletico were first to falter with their fourth penalty as Juanfran hit the right post with his right-footed shot. Real talisman, Christiano Ronaldo, stepped up to convert the winning penalty with the ball screaming into the roof of the net.
