Delhi- South Africa beat Sri Lanka with eight wickets as they ultimately failed to qualify for the semifinals of the T20 World Cup at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Monday. Reports Piet Lategan.
Faf du Plessis won the toss for the Proteas as they inserted Sri Lanka who could only muster 120 before being bowled out in 19.3 overs. Kyle Abbott weighed in with 2/15 while Farhaan Behardien took 2/15.
The Proteas then stormed to 122/2 with 14 balls to spare as Hashim Amla scored 56* off 52 balls and Du Plessis 31 off 36 balls. AB de Villiers came in and finished the match with a towering six over midwicket off a full toss as he finished on 20* off 12 balls.
It is time for some introspection for the Proteas as they failed to adapt to Infian conditions where ball variation and a fast start with the bat while the ball is still hard is of critical importance. When push came to shove the batsmen disappeared into thin air while the bowlers persisted with bowling length or back of a length with little or no variation. That equates to bowling absolute rubbish in Indian conditions and with that the love affair between the Proteas and and a legacy of mediocrity, continued.
